Hello, Ishtaria! Happy 4th of July to all of you! It's that time once again: Time to get to Know Your Units! This week, we chose our unit via a contest on Reddit, with the winner being Ms. Pototo. She chose to have us research the most patriotic American unit there is (he's not), Jiang Wei. There's some good stuff ahead, so let's get to it!
Historical Information
Jiang Wei was a Chinese general who lived from 202-264AD. His courtesy name (a name given to someone when they come of age) was Boyue. He was a regent for the emperor, meaning that he ruled the land with the Emperor's authority while he was unable to fulfill his duties, either due to age, absence, or illness. Regency wasn't all that uncommon in China during the 3 Kingdoms Era, probably due in part to the emperors being warlords who got themselves killed, leaving their young kids in charge.
The main part of his life story begins when Jiang Wei's C.O. had a feeling that Jiang was considering leaving Wei and joining Zhuge Liang, a chancellor and regent of Shu Han. Rather than questioning him, they locked Jiang and his subordinates outside the gates, giving them no option but to join Zhuge Liang. Zhuge accepts him into the army and makes him a high-ranking officer. Sources speculate that this may have been done to spite Wei for rejecting Jiang. Zhuge and Jiang together led a heavy campaign against Wei. When Zhuge died, his successor Jiang Wan made Jiang Wei the governor of the Liang Province, a title he held until Jiang Wan died. The next in line, Fei Yi, gave Jiang Wei a promotion to Chief Assistant to the Regent. Zhuge Liang's death marked the end of the campaign against Wei, and Jiang Wei wasn't a fan of that. His new position with Fei Yi gave him the leverage he needed to take the fight back to Wei, even though Fei Yi limited how aggressive this new campaign could be.
Fei Yi was eventually killed. Jiang Wei, being the next at bat, became the new regent. However, the death of Fei Yi didn't cause all his power to be given to one person. Rather, it was divided up. Jiang Wei had full control of the military, and that was it. The others who had bits of Fei Yi's power (namely Zhuge Zhan, son of Zhuge Liang) had concerns that this unlimited military power would be used to revoke their own power.
The short form of the story from here is that the campaigns against Wei became a massive undertaking that had huge wins and losses. Many high-ups advised Jiang Wei to stop these attacks, but he continued. The end result was the end of the Shu. Strangely, when Wei took over Shu, Jiang Wei was made a top advisor. As would be expected, he did what we saw Midack do: he betrayed Wei (HUGE SHOCKER) to try to reestablish Shu. You can guess how well that worked out.
In-Game Description
There was a time when he stood against Shu... But that changed when he met the Chancellor. It is said he was taken in by the skills of Zhuge Liang, becoming her loyal follower. And although he always was glad to fulfill the wishes of the Chancellor, something recently has been on his mind...
Here we have a description that gives us a brief glimpse of the life of the real Jiang Wei, as described in the historical section. The last sentence is the interesting part though. Everything else in the description goes as history said, but what is that thing that's on his mind, distracting him from his goals? Why, his involvement in the story of Ishtaria, of course. Specifically, his crush Liu Bei. Historically, Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang were close. Liu Bei was the Emperor, while Zhuge Liang was the brilliant strategist. It was after Liu Bei died that Zhuge got heavily involved in the military first-hand.
The romance between the Ishtarian Liu Bei and Jiang Wei is meant to be an image of Jiang Wei's dedication to Shu to be more about the country (and the Emperor) and less about just getting revenge for being exiled from his home.
Quote of Note:
"Oh it is you. Care to talk if you have a space moment, Knight?"
This quote is the single most important quote ever quoted in all of Ishtarian history. In it, Jiang Wei is asking you to talk to him if you have a "space moment". He is apparently interested in researching these, so he wants the stories of people who have experienced them. To an Ishtarian warrior, a space moment is rare and must be recorded immediately to prevent loss of data. Fortunately for us, we live in a day in which we can record such things with ease. For the curious, behold this space moment that was recorded on December 23, 2015. It is not for the faint of heart, so view at your discretion.
Skills:
Passive Skill: Boyue's Baton- As we mentioned earlier, Jiang Wei's courtesy name was Boyue. The skill is named in his honor.
Passive Skill: A stunning move- Not really all that significant in terms of lore and history, this skill is more of a description of how Jiang Wei makes Pototo~Chan's heart go pitter-patter.
Images
Base Jiang Wei has a neutral appearance. His weapon is drawn, but he looks peaceful. His garment is white (denoting purity) with black trim (denoting expertise). Robes of this sort were seen in Imperial China on scholars. He may look peaceful right now, but he could still shred you in seconds if you say the wrong thing. Unlike (nearly) all full-blooded Chinese people, he is shown as a blonde. This is probably just because ladies dig blonde dudes.
The evolved Jiang Wei wears a green robe with black pants underneath. His armor is fragmented across his body and resembles metallic dragon bones. His armor philosophy is the same as the female characters: less is much, much more. Something about him, whether it be a spell or an enchantment on his equipment, has allowed him to summon a dragon to his aid. Chinese dragons are typically viewed as having control over aspects of nature, like rivers, storms, etc. By having this dragon's power at his disposal, Jiang Wei assures his victory in battle.
There are no Power Plays on the Wiki, so I'm afraid that's all I have prepared for this issue. If you know of any Power Plays, let me know in the comments below. Make sure to vote in the poll/participate in the contest (if applicable) to determine what we'll be doing in the next Know Your Units!
