Hello, Ishtaria! I'm your host Esdeath and it's time once again to get to Know Your Units! This time, I had a request from my lovely waifu Indixa to make a post about Scathach. I can't say no to her, so I prepared this issue of Know Your Units just for her. The rest of you just get to enjoy it as well. Without further ado, let's get started!
Mythological Information
Scathach is a figure from Irish Legend. She is particularly well known for her skill as a warrior and as a trainer who lived at Dún Scáith on the Isle of Skye. She is a spear master, utilizing her legendary weapon known as Gae Bolg.
In the original Ulster Cycle texts, Scathach primarily appears in the adventures of Cú Chulainn.
As a legendary combat trainer, Scathach attracts young talent seeking to become powerful. One such fighter is the Cú Chulainn, one of the superheroes in Irish mythology. As we know, Irish mythology is composed of a bunch of terrible people doing terrible things to other terrible people, so buckle up.
Scathach had a daughter named Uathach, who had a boyfriend named Cochar. During Cú Chulainn's time training with Scathach, he decided to train certain non-combat skills by seducing Uathach. He definitely didn't have enough skill points invested in dexterity, as his special training with Uathach resulted in her fingers being broken (seriously, WHAT?). Uathach wasn't into that kind of thing, so she screamed in pain. Cochar overheard the screaming and came to save his lover from danger. Being the declared "good guy", Cú Chulainn kills Cochar (seriously, how dare Cochar try to interfere with another man screwing his girlfriend and breaking her fingers, the nerve of some people). Cú Chulainn takes over Cochar's jobs around Scathach's facilities and with her daughter. Now under Scathach's thumb, the hero is sent to handle Scathach's rival Aife. Cú Chulainn rapes Aife and kills the resulting child instead of doing what Scathach sent him to do, but he's the hero of the story so it's all ok.
During his training under Scathach, Cú Chulainn is gifted Gae Bolg (it's very Gae) because OP weapons are just part of being the main character. Scathach boils down to "that" character that gives the main character a valuable weapon. Unfortunately, she isn't of much use outside of the Ulster Cycle.
In-Game Description
Original
The Kingdom of Shadows, a place where only the strongest can enter. Within the Kingdom lies a castle surrounded by seven walls and nine iron fences. It is within this castle, where the queen awaits. A powerful sorceress, and an able warrior, she has many loyal students who have pledged themselves to her.
The developers of Age of Ishtaria chose to make Scathach a dark character. She is portrayed as a multifaceted character, mastering magical and melee combat while also running a kingdom and a training ground for new warrior talent. Her skills in all these fields are legendary, making her that teacher that everyone wants to have.
Valentine's Day
Deep within the Castle of the Shadow Kingdom, 2 girls lurked, trying to sneak a peek of that magical crystal. What was reflected in that crystal was images of a day where, even in the Shadow Kingdom, love is celebrated. A day where the bloodshed stops, if only for a moment.
Vday Scathach is portrayed as a woman with a desperate crush on someone else. Fortunately, she has worked up the courage to confess this love to him. Unfortunately, another woman has planned to do the same... with the same man. This drama plays out in a Tales of History, where Scathach is in competition with Aife to see who gets to confess her love to Cú Chulainn. Aife is Scathach's sister and a general in the army in AoI, not her rival. These sisters have a history of fighting, including Aife's attempt to take over the kingdom. The entire story is just Aife and Scathach fighting until Scathach puts Aife in her place. It isn't until the very end that something happens. It is a one-sided conversion between Scathach and her student Cú Chulainn. In it she offers homemade chocolates to him as a confession of her love. This Tales of History event was easily one of the most distorted uses of the original Lore, but it was still oddly satisfying and made for a good story.
Swimsuit
Inside the Kingdom of Shadows there is a queen who passed her royal responsibilities to her sister. And although she knows she should probably be heading back, Scathach decided to spend a little extra time on Paradise Island. Guess it is going to be a bit longer before she returns to her duties.
Even though Aife isn't the queen, it is her role to perform Scathach's duties any time she is away. As we've learned, Paradise Island (also known as Pleasure Island in other units' descriptions) is pretty much the only vacation spot in all of Ishtaria, yet it somehow never gets overcrowded. Even with the sheer number of people on the island, the Kingdom of Shadows allows its queen to go on vacation unescorted. The island is so relaxing (when there aren't global catastrophes unfolding there that the Knight has to fix) that people who visit have no desire to leave. As a queen, Scathach's decision to stay could be detrimental to her people, especially with her jealous sister running the show. Meh. It's vacation. Let someone else worry about it.
Festival
What is taking her so long!? How long does she expect me to watch over this throne of hers, anyways? Oh I looked into that magical crystal... I know EXACTLY what she's doing! I wish I could go to a festival! I wish I didn't have to do all her - Excuse me? Break time's over? No. It can't be...
Scathach has few times that she can be free and live like a normal person, but perhaps an even greater joy she has is that she can torture her sister when these opportunities arise. Festival Scathach's description is told from the perspective of Aife trapped at home while her sister enjoys the festival. The magic crystal mentioned here is referenced in the Vday Tales of History as an artifact that lets them see present events in other locations. Its existence is convenient for stories involving Scathach and Aife, as seen here.
Remix
How long has it been since the Queen graced the arena? Festivals... Valentines Day... Paradise Island... This Queen has sure experienced a lot of the physical world. But alas, all good things must come to an end. Aife tired and fed up it was time for Scathach to return to her duties.
Ok, Scath. There comes a point that you really need to get back to work. You've tormented your sister for years now and haven't set foot in your castle since your Vday rendezvous with Cú Chulainn. I wish I had that good of a vacation plan with my company.
Skills
Scathach follows a pattern with her skills. Her action skill is always named in some way after her very, very Gae spear. Her other skill, always a passive/unique, gives a brief nod to the darker side of this character. I'll list them all below, and you'll see the pattern.
Multi Skill: Gae Bolg's Rage
Passive Skill: Sadistic Snicker
Rush Skill: Gae Bolg's Compassion
Passive Skill: Queen's Resolve
Rush Skill: Tropical Gae Bolg
Passive Skill: Queen's War Cry
Rush Skill: Gleeful Gae Bolg
Passive Skill: Queen's Resolution
Multi/Rush Skill: Gae Bolg's Fury
Unique Skill: Rage Filled Rune
Images
AoI wasn't as original as they could have been with this character. While there is plenty of detail, it was ripped from the character named Scathach in Fate/Grand Order. This is a similar tactic as used with the design of Zhuge Liang, who was feminized and moved to a different game.
However, let's suspend our disbelief for just a moment.
Scathach is seen here with 5 main colors: white, burgundy, purple, brown, and gold. The only white seen is the top side of her cape. The burgundy is the primary color in her shirt. Her hair is a more reddish burgundy. Purple, the color of royalty, is displayed in the underside of her cape and her feather skirt as well as her eyes. Brown is used for her leggings, wristlets, and her Battle Ready Armor. Gold is used conservatively as an accent rather than an overwhelming primary color via jewelry.
She is holding her beloved black and purple spear, Gae Bolg, ready to strike. Her pose here and the background seem to indicate that this depicts a scene I which Scathach is performing one of her runic spells. The particle effect around her is usually seen in either space-related or magic-related images and movies. The ruins behind her are presumably part of her Kingdom of Shadows; just don't tell her that her kingdom is made of ruins or you might become ruins yourself.
As an evolved unit, Scathach is in bloodlust mode. Her primary weapon now is Gae Bolg, which she seems to be controlling with magic. Her cape is drastically changed to better suit the rest of her appearance. Her cape begins with a thick fur collar. The cape flows down from the collar from there. Now the whole cape is a single color: a burgundy that is only slightly darker than her shirt. The rest of her outfit is similar to the base unit's, only with more gold ornaments everywhere and a substantial portion of her skirt missing, presumably in the form of the feathers flying all over the place. New accessories that look like golden spearheads on gold chains have been added to her outfit. Her leg covering is inverted now. Instead of leggings with bare calves, she's wearing knee-high socks with nothing covering her thighs. Obviously, this is a strategic combat choice and we shouldn't question it. Also, don't stare. That's rude.
Vday
Valentine's Day Scathach is designed to look like a mix of the base OG Scathach and the evo OG Scathach with a few changes. Since we went into deep detail on OG Scathach, I won't re-describe the reused material.
This Scathach has a deep purple cape instead of burgundy. There are purple boxes with red bows flying around, which we can assume are chocolates that she has made. Additionally, Gae Bolg has a bow on it as well as her wrists, indicating that she is a gift as well. Based upon our knowledge of the associated Tales of History, these gifts are all for the hero Cú Chulainn, who apparently isn't a rapist or her daughter's lover in Ishtaria. She is also carrying a satchel with unknown cargo inside.
In typical Ishtarian fashion, the evolved Vday Scathach is dressed for the... um... occasion. Her shirt is replaced with a bra with shreds of fabric hanging off of it. She has no skirt, just a pair of panties, and her body is gift wrapped just in case the chocolates (that's what was in the satchel, which is open now) have the anticipated effects on their target (endorphins are great for a season of love). My only question is why is there a second box of chocolates in the satchel? Did she have a backup man in case he didn't fall for her tricks? The world may never know.
Swimsuit
Swimsuit Scathach as a base unit starts out in a coverup with hints of her bikini showing. She has a scowl on her face that indicates that the chocolates from Valentine's Day didn't go over so well. In spite of this, she's wearing a blossom in her hair, a common sight on Ishtarian summer units.
Evolved, she seems to be enjoying herself a little more than before. She even put her spear down for a minute to enjoy the ocean. I won't go into detail on this one because I know you perverts will just look at the picture and see it all anyway. However I bet most of you said "what spear?" when I pointed it out.
Festival
Festival Scathach follows the tradition of units wearing a Yukata, but it's a dark purple unlike the vibrant and bright colors we usually see. This psychopath brought her spear to the festival, so it's aura of dark magic follows her everywhere. She is smiling for once, so she must have gotten over the heartache of being rejected on Valentine's Day. She seems to be 100% alone as usual, probably because people run when you walk around with a weapon drawn.
Evolved, her Yukata is more colorful and bright, but her smile is gone. She must have seen Cú Chulainn at the festival and is going home in an angry fit. She's still going to enjoy the festival on her way out, though, as evidenced by the fan she's still carrying.
Remix
Last, and definitely not least, we have Remix Scathach. The typical remix of a unit is essentially the OG form's evo redrawn. However, Scathach breaks that trend. Instead, they chose to base Remix Scathach off of her Valentine's Day evolved form. They did rip some details from the OG form such as the color of her bra. They also stole the golden ornament at her waist from OG base Scathach, but added purple gems reminiscent of the flower in her hair in her SS base. Her garter is more elegant than before. Her Vday garter was just a leather belt tied around her leg. This is more specialized for its purpose. In this version, they surrounded her with crows, a nod to the crows hidden in the backgrounds of SS base and Vday evo. Crows tend to be associated with black magic, which is Scathach's specialty. As such, they are naturally attracted to her no matter where she goes.
Power Plays
Scathach is involved in 4 known Power Plays, listed below.
Valentine Beauties: This Power Play boosts the health of 2016 Valentine's units
Never Ending Summer: This Power Play boosts the health of units from Seaside Packs,
Belly of the Beast (Kraken), The Gift of Summer, and A Call to Arms: Death Warrant
Shadow Goddesses: This Power Play boosts the skill chance of OG Scathach and Aife. This is interesting because it hints that the Ishtarian units here are not actually human, but are in fact goddesses.
Shadow Teachings: Of course, there had to be a Power Play for Scathach and her favorite student Cú Chulainn. This one boosts their skill chance.
As you can see, the AoI developers took a somewhat underdeveloped character and made her into something special that has warranted many variations and remakes. Scathach is a special character that has been given special attention.
That's all for this one, folks. Let me know if I made any mistakes below, and if you enjoyed it, make sure to thank Indixa for having good taste in units! See you next time!
