The harsh work schedule is easing up a bit, so I have made a somewhat triumphant return! Hello, Ishtaria! I'm your Professor of Unitology, and this is Know Your Units!
After Scrooge, I was wondering "Where should I go next with the series?" There are thousands of units to choose from, so I did the worst thing I could think of to get ideas: ask Baldini . So if this one's a flop, blame him. However, since it's a unit based on Norse Mythology, it probably won't be.
Mythological Information
If we learned anything from Jormungand, Norse mythology revolves around a single event that is essentially the end of the world: Ragnorok. As a quick breakdown for those who don't feel like going back through Jorm's KYU, Ragnorok is a cataclysmic event triggered when Jormungand, the World Serpent and son of Loki, releases his tail from his mouth. During the chaos that follows, Jormungand, Thor, Loki, and Odin all die.
Fimbulvetr, or "Awful Winter" (also "Great Winter") is a series of 3 winters that have no break in between for summer, fall, and spring. It is an event that will entail massive wars. The wars will work alongside the harshness of the weather to kill all the humans and animals on earth except for Líf and Lífþrasir, who are the ones expected to repopulate the earth, similar to Noah's sons after the global flood.
Fimbulvetr is seen as a warning sign that Ragnorok is imminent. AoI personifies this horrific event in the person of the same name. As you'd expect, this character is female like 99% of the population of Ishtaria.
Ingame Description
Just don't let her in. Everlasting ice and snow. With her in town, the sun will never rise, leaving everything in an eternal hibernation. But no need to worry, not yet at least. For she is lost, and it's going to be a while before she finds her way.
Ishtaria's Fimbulvetr is a walking apocalypse of ice and darkness. Instead of global destruction for 3 years, she's instead a source of local destruction all the days of her life. The way she's described here is reminiscent of the stories of El Chupacabra, an imaginary creature created to help parents make their children behave out of fear.
Quotes
More lore is revealed in Fimbulvetr's quotes than in her description. Her descriptive quotes and her homepage quotes tell 2 separate tales, so we'll be going through both.
Descriptive Quotes
"Unhappiness is what you are after?
Sure. If that's what you want."
Where will I go? I will go nowhere.
There is nowhere I would like to go.
Well since you are here, I have
no choice. I will end the eternity."
Being the carrier of the end of the world must make you bitter and hard to get along with. Fimbulvetr is a girl on a mission, a mission she doesn't want to be a part of. She acknowledges, however, that she must complete her mission regardless of who tries to stop her. The dark nature of her mission makes her a joy to be around.
Homepage Quotes
"You. Knight? Why are you concerned
with me? The Demise is the only news
I bring... An end we all will inevitably
reach at some point.
I am on a journey. I should really
get going, but - Maybe I would rather
go on an adventure with you, Knight.
As long as my journey continues, the
Demise will stay dormant. Walking with
you, adventuring through the show -
Who knew it would be this enjoyable..."
The Knight really needs to be working for the Suicide Hotline. This girl is all kinds of depressed and has a laundry list of psychological issues, yet he manages to get Fimbulvetr to stray from her path of destruction long enough to think about maybe living a non-destuctive life.
What's interesting here is that Ragnorok is referred to as the "Demise" here, an event that the Knight already stopped by beating Nina half to death and killing half the population of heaven. Apparently, there is a second Demise that is similar to Ragnorok in Ishtaria, which Fimbulvetr is responsible for beginning.
Skills
Passive Skill: A Frosty Finish - Fimbulvetr (the Norse Event) is indeed a frosty finish to the world. It all ends for humanity there (except for 2), then the gods die in Ragnorok. Some really cheerful stuff.
Passive Skill: Before Ragnarok - As Fimbulvetr is the precursor to Ragnorok, this skill's name is fairly straightforward.
Images
Fimbulvetr is depicted as a young girl in a perpetual state of anger, probably due to her aura of death and destruction. She is adorned with gold, indicating that it is the gods that have sent her on this journey of destruction. Her clothing is that of traditional Norse men, remade for women. She carries a staff, presumably imbued with the power over ice, given the ice crystal on top of it (sorry, it won't be casting magic missile into the darkness). Various golden ornaments across her outfit and staff have diamond-shaped gold pieces that float in midair about a point of origin for the cluster. Magical floating pieces aren't anything new for magical characters, but it is still noteworthy. For an unknown reason, there are wings connected to her golden decorations that seem to serve no purpose. We'll see more of these when we get to her evolved form, which is right now.
Evolved Fimbulvetr is more elegantly dressed, adopting a robe of royalty and adding rubies to her already-extravagant gold pieces. Her entire body and staff are surrounded by ice fragments under her control. We have a better view of her wings this time around, and they are clearly made onto her golden assembly, serving no real purpose other than for style. She's become slightly more foxy than she was in her last version by gaining a set of fox ears. As far as we can see, there is no tail.
That's all for this installation of Know Your Units, folks! I'll see you next time!Have an ice day!
