Check back each Monday for the next issue of Know Your Units!
February 27th:Morrigan
Hello, Ishtaria! It's that time once again: it's time to Know Your Units! Ever so often, our friends at Silicon Studios like to throw us a psychotic, murderous vixen to play with. The Phantom Queen, Morrigan, is exactly that. Let's take a journey into a land of nightmares and death!
Mythological Information
Morrigan (Mór-ríoghain) is a mysterious character from Irish legend with multiple interpretations. We'll be focusing on the interpretation closest to the version depicted in Ishtaria. Morrigan is always surrounded by death and suffering. In one instance, she prophesies the death of Cú Chulainn, who is (surprise, surprise) another unit in Ishtaria. It seems that wherever she goes, death is sure to follow. Wikipedia has a bountiful supply of stories of her adventures. In each one, Morrigan has a tendency to set things into motion (intentionally) that end in chaos, death, and wanton destruction.
Particularly important is the depiction of the Morrigan as a crow. This is her most well-known form, which is how Cú Chulainn identified her in his first encounter with her. From that point on, she manipulated the situations in his life so that his violent death would come to fruition as she prophesied. As the capstone on that chapter of her mischief, she landed on his body in the form of a crow when he died, almost mocking him.
In-Game Description
A pile of bodies amassed on the battle field. DIE!!! DIE!!! DIE!!! someone screamed, laughing. A fair fight? No. For this wasn't even a battle, just a simple game of chaos and destruction. No one is safe from her, for Morrigan dose not discriminate when it comes to her precious little victims.
This sounds like something out of a horror movie. 10/10 would watch this movie. This is a great summary of the antics of the Morrigan in Irish mythology. As previously stated, she's known for setting the stage for events. She's a powerful being, but she derives her pleasure in her power through causing chaos through little actions here and there. She will get the end result she desires, even if countless people have to die for it to happen.
Noteworthy Quote
Macha. Nemain. What are you doing?
In Irish mythology, the mother goddess Ernmas has 3 daughters, "The Sources of Bitter Fighting" that go by the names of Macha, Badb, and Nemain. They form a "trio goddess" of sorts known as the Morrigan. Each of these sisters has their own manifestations and purposes. Notably, Badb is known as the sister that takes the form of a crow. Therefore, it could be that the Phantom Queen in Ishtaria is specifically Badb.
Skills of Note
Rush Skill- In Nightmares: This skill is aptly-named, as the name "The Morrigan" roughly translates into "Phantom Queen". Another translation is "Nightmare Queen". The only thing scarier than a horrifying death is one experienced in nightmares, because it can be experienced again and again.
Passive Skill- Destruction Awaits: This double-edged sword of a passive skill decreases the health of enemies and allies. This is so appropriate for Morrigan that it bears repeating. This unit quickens the outcome of the battle by weakening everyone drastically. Just as the legends of the Morrigan speak of a manipulator who plays for the outcome regardless of the cost, this skill is perfect for her character. My mind was blown when I read the skill's description with a new perspective of who she is.
Power Plays
Phantom Prince- This power play between Morrigan and Cú Chulainn gives both of them an attack boost. This is a nod to their hostile relationship with one another in the legends about them.
Image
In her base form, Morrigan wears a Celtic dress, only far more revealing. She is holding a spear, a weapon perfect for inflicting stab and puncture wounds (what else would you expect from our little psychopath?). Crows rest on her shoulders to emphasize that she is the Morrigan from the story of the death of Cú Chulainn. To further push the "crow" theme, the chest piece that functions as the armor for her upper body is shaped and textured like a crow's wings.
When Morrigan is evolved, her clothing is not a factor in the discussion anymore other than there are now literal crow wings attached to what little fabric is left. The crow wings on her body no longer belong to a bird, but are her literal wings. If you haven't caught on to the crow theme yet, she's also wearing dual hairpieces that are, you guessed it, crow wings. To add to the idea that this girl is associated with death and destruction, there are chains in the background, possibly even originating from the same points of her back that her wings come from. There's also a really scary red-eyed skull in the background to drive home the point that this woman is the bringer of death.
Thank you all for reading this dark picture of a dangerously violent waifu. If you want this unit for yourself, you'll have to grind the Nightmare Rift, which is an oddly appropriate place to get her.
